Photograpy (my other passion)

I love photography, I started when I was a kid taking "fashion" shots of my sisters by dressing them up in every article of clothing I could find as "Punk Rockers" of the 80's, posing them and taking roll after roll of film of them. I look back at the pics now and see how funny they were, but I loved it.

In college I took a photography class and enjoyed photographing my artwork to submit to shows and galleries.

About a year and a half ago I picked up a Nikon D200, and it has been a love affair every since. So here are a few shots I took of my Daughter. I didn't have my camera with me at the time so these are taken with a simple Kodak point and shoot camera my wife has. I forgot about the time stamp or I would not have had it on when I took the pics, let alone stamp the wrong date onto the pic.

These are obviously not photoshopped images, they need some retouching, but not bad for a simple point and shoot.

Lil Boyz and Big Dragons

I just started a painting that has actually been waiting in the wings for several years now. I first conceived the idea when pitching a portrait concept to a client.

I like to create portraits that are very different from the norm. So I thought of a way to do a portrait of 2 boys playing in their room after bedtime. Half of the painting would be reality, while the other half would be imagination. I pictured the boys with their toy swords and super hero capes fighting off an imaginary dragon.

When I first thought of the idea several years ago it was for a client that had 2 boys, but they chose not to do the painting, but I have always felt it was a great idea, so I decided to do it with my 2 boys. As time usually does, I haven't gotten around to it until now, so I have 3 boys, and decided to incorporate all of them into the painting.

What you see here are some of the pictures I took to do the painting from, and the preliminary "sketching" where I am trying to work out the composition for the piece.

I chose to sketch it in paint this  time, usually I do a pencil drawing of the piece first, but I chose a different approach, and went straight to paint. I like it so far because I have been able to use a paper towel and turpentine to "erase" mistakes and areas I wanted to change.

These prices are based on one person/figure in each photo with a simple background. If you would like to include more people in each painting the cost will go up by $1.50 per square inch for each person you add.

Unless specified, each portrait will be painted in Raw Umber, (similar to Sepia Tone but slightly more yellow).

Justin McGuire Portrait

This is a portrait I recently finished. I originally started this as a study I wanted to do off of a photo I had taken of him while doing a photo shoot for a family portrait.

As I progressed, it went from a study to a full color portrait. and is one of my best yet.

I used washes of orange and green in the background covered in layers of neutrals to darken them. The orange creates a nice contrast for the blue shirt which I then had to darken with subtle washes of orange and dark neutrals because it popped way too much.
